Danish Lesson One

The most important Danish word is 'Hej', which one might loosely translate into the English/American 'Hi'. The Danish Hej however has a lot of other meanings, entirely depending on the connection, the phrasing, the timbre, the mood, the musical way, its said, and sometimes supported by the accompanying body language.

Here is a first Danish lesson then, with a glimpse in the eye, on how the Danish word Hej can be used in many connections. You better practice the use of it, to make sure you get the right meaning communicated!

Good Morning: Hej

Good Midday: Hej

Good Evening : Hej

Hello: Hej

Goodbye: Hej

Happy to see you: Hej

Oh, are you there again: Hej

We met before: Hej

We never met: Hej

What a surprise to see you here: Hej

Oh, I did not expect you back so soon: Hej

Could you do me a favor: Hej

Please don't interfere here: Hej

Get lost: Hej

Please help me: Hej

I'd like to get to know you: Hej

Would you like to get to know me: Hej

I love you: Hej

Get out of my life: Hej

In Southern Danish language, the famous dialect of Sønderjysk, the word Hej is 'Møjn'. So you have several options now to speak Danish and Sønderjysk! Go practice!
